Anxiety can feel as though the mind and body have forgotten how to settle. Reiki offers a quiet, low-demand space where you can pause, notice your breathing, and allow your nervous system time to soften.
People often describe anxiety through racing thoughts, muscle tension, restlessness, a quickened heartbeat, or difficulty sleeping. Reiki does not diagnose or cure an anxiety disorder. Some people do, however, find the stillness and focused care of a session deeply relaxing.
How Reiki may support an anxious mind
A Reiki session asks very little of you. You remain fully clothed, usually resting on a treatment table while the practitioner places their hands lightly on, or just above, different areas of the body. There is no pressure to talk or perform.
That unhurried setting may be helpful in several practical ways:
- It creates protected time away from daily stimulation.
- Quiet breathing and stillness may encourage a relaxation response.
- Gentle attention to the body can help bring awareness out of racing thoughts.
- A consistent self-care ritual can make rest feel intentional rather than accidental.
Within Reiki tradition, practitioners describe this as supporting balance in the body's energy. You do not need to hold any particular belief to receive a session or to value the experience of rest.
What does the research say?
Some small clinical trials have reported reductions in anxiety or stress after Reiki. For example, a 2023 randomised sham-controlled trial involving people awaiting gastrointestinal endoscopy found lower anxiety and stress after a single Reiki intervention. These findings are interesting, but one study in a specific setting cannot establish that Reiki treats anxiety more broadly.
The overall evidence remains mixed and many studies are small or limited in quality. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says Reiki has not been clearly shown to be effective for a health-related purpose. The most responsible reading is that some people report relaxation and comfort, while stronger research is still needed.
What to expect in a session
Before we begin, we talk briefly about what has brought you in and what would help you feel comfortable. You can ask for hands-off treatment at any time. During the session, you may notice warmth, tingling, heaviness, lightness, emotion, or simply a sense of quiet. It is also completely normal to feel very little.
There is no fixed number of sessions that suits everyone. Some people value a single restorative appointment; others choose occasional sessions as part of a wider wellbeing routine. We can decide together without pressure or promises.
A simple self-Reiki pause
- Sit or lie somewhere supported and comfortable.
- Place one hand over your chest and the other over your abdomen.
- Let your breath move naturally. Notice the warmth and weight of your hands.
- Stay for five minutes, or for as long as feels comfortable.
This is a settling practice, not emergency or medical treatment. If anxiety is persistent, worsening, or affecting daily life, please speak with a GP or qualified mental health professional.
